Renewed by Soho House’s Global Director of Art, Kate Bryan, in 2018, the House features more than 300 artworks by an international line-up, including focused presentations and site-specific installations. Installed on mirrors in the Circle Bar, 40-40-40 is a platform for young artists – 40 artists under the age of 40 at 40 Greek Street. Many of these artists have gone on to achieve great success since, including Issy Wood, Holly Hendry and Megan Rooney.
For the curatorial game, Walk The Line, we asked 19 established London-based artists to create single-line continuous drawings based on a famous Paul Klee quotation: ‘a line is a dot that went for a walk.’ Artists include Tracey Emin, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Maggi Hambling, Idris Khan, Conrad Shawcross, Helen Marten, Tacita Dean, Elmgreen & Dragset, and Yinka Shonibare.
The art in the reception area is based on the theme of the written word featuring a book cover painting by Harland Miller, a large newspaper diptych by Elmgreen & Dragset, photographs of abandoned libraries by Gina Soden, a book entirely redacted in blue pen by Edith Dekyndt, and minimalist paintings made by wrapping and dipping book edges by Jeff McMillan.
The House incorporates a good number of sculptural works, including pieces by Polly Morgan, Julian Wild, Amy Stephens, and a major marble work by Kevin Francis Gray on the first-floor terrace.
Several works are site specific, including photo frescoes in the Soho Room by Walter & Zoniel that pay homage to long-standing Soho House team members, including Founder Nick Jones, and the large tapestry in the reception stairwell by Annie Morris.
Other highlights include Charming Baker’s Ducks series in the events room, work by Sarah Lucas, Glenn Ligon and Bedwyr Williams, and paintings on paper by Adrien Ghenie.
