Soho House Tokyo

Art collection at Soho House Tokyo

This collection brings together an exploration of Japanese contemporary art shaped by 40 artists born, based, or trained in Japan, alongside practices from the Japanese diaspora

Across the works, artists explore quiet moments of lived experience — intimacy, domesticity, and the poetry of everyday life — alongside reflections on memory, absence, and loss. These introspective gestures are set in dialogue with environments ranging from meditative landscapes to investigations of dense, chaotic urban life.

A third of the artists in the collection have created new commissions specifically for this project, reflecting a strong commitment to site-specific work created in close dialogue with the artists. These include a contemporary reimagining of the traditional room divider by Toru Otani, conceived as both functional object and sculptural installation; a dedicated ceramic installation by Gabriel Hartley in the private dining area; a site-specific iteration of David Horvitz’s ‘Nostalgia‘ series for the club bar; and a limited-edition set of artworks by Hiroya Kurata for the bedrooms.

A particular collection highlight is the work of institutional artists Yuko Mohri and Ryoji Ikeda, welcoming members on the 13th and 14th floors respectively. Mohri’s ‘Bride (Contingency)’ draws conceptual inspiration from ‘The Large Glass’ by Marcel Duchamp, reinterpreting its exploration of chance, desire, and mechanical poetics through a contemporary lens. Meanwhile, Ikeda’s ‘data.scape [universe]’ challenges our perception of space and time, and as the largest wall-based new media installation in the collection to date, it stands as an ambitious work that feels especially fitting for Tokyo.
