Members share their best-kept secrets to getting things done and why it’s a work base like no other

There’s no one way to approach a creative career – but you can be certain it will be full of unexpected turns and encounters, impostor syndrome outbreaks and, if you’re lucky, occasional triumphs. Along the way, you’ll need two things: a comfortable adaptable workplace, and community to share joys and pains with. Soho Works has both – which is the reason why it’s so beloved by creatives in London, New York and Los Angeles (or those hopping between all three).

Soho Works is a network of workspaces by Soho House, designed to help creative thinkers and businesses connect, collaborate, and grow. It has the Soho House signature ‘home away from home’ feeling – perfect for creatives whose passion is often part of their identity well beyond the nine to five. With meeting rooms, studios, desk spaces, podcasting equipment, reliable Wi-Fi, snacks and coffee on tap, it has all the technology you need to get your work done. But, most importantly, it gives you a network of friends, collaborators, supporters, and opportunities.

For a first-hand insight into the Soho Works community, we asked five members how and where they work, and what they love most about the spaces in London, Los Angeles and New York.

1. ‘Always speak to fellow workers who are sitting alone’
Ruth Aymer, founder of jewellery brand Aymer Maria
White City, London

‘As an independent jewellery designer, I feel it’s essential to have a community. The support I feel by being in a space with like-minded entrepreneurs helps me focus and remain inspired.  If I had to choose the best Soho Works location, I’d say White City. The sky views and calm atmosphere helps with concentration and would double up as my favourite spot; sitting by the windows at White City looking over London.

‘I like the app, mainly for events and talks. I’ve learnt so much from participating in Soho Works talks and made great connections with people who have then gone on to help me grow my business. My top tip is speaking to my peers who are perhaps sitting alone. I’ve met so many interesting people by catching someone’s eye, saying hello and striking up a conversation. Before you know it, you’ve started your own micro-office with other entrepreneurs who can take turns doing the tea run, share any forgotten computer cables, and guide you through any hardships of the day.’

2. ‘Tap into West Hollywood’s oat milk lattes’
Ezra Alvarez, director of partnerships at TIME
9000 Sunset, West Hollywood, Los Angeles

‘West Hollywood is my favourite location. I love working and looking out on a view of Sunset Boulevard at iconic venues such as The Rainbow Room and The Roxy; a great reminder of Sunset Boulevard’s history and creative energy. I also love the staff and management of Soho Works. They remember your name, and likes and dislikes, and feel like a real professional community. Also, oat milk lattes on tap are the best.’

3. ‘Make new connections with members at lunchtime’
Megan Bruneau, therapist, executive coach, writer, speaker, and podcast host
875 Washington, New York

‘Like many, I left New York during the pandemic. When I returned to the city, I had just gone through a break-up and was living out of a suitcase between temporary apartments. I felt pretty disconnected and disoriented, and I knew I needed familiarity, community, and structure. Soho Works seemed to offer all of that.

‘My favourite thing about Soho Works is the people. I’m constantly humbled and inspired by the conscious and courageous creatives Soho House curates. My favourite spot is in the kitchen on the third floor. As an extrovert, I love meeting and chatting with members when they grab their lunch or refill their coffee.’

4. ‘Get in early on a Friday if you want breakfast pastries’
Melissa Sinclair, founder of Big Hair + Beauty
White City, London

‘The best thing about joining Soho Works is that it was meant to be temporary and occasional for meetings and teamwork, but now I’m a permanent member and there most of the week as it’s a great space to work from.

‘White City Works is by far my favourite location. It’s got a great vibe and has a nice flow to the layout. I like the comfy chairs beside the kitchen, but if I need to get my head down I’ll sit at the desks towards the balcony or the quiet corner near reception. Best White City Works life hack? Get there early on a Friday if you want breakfast pastries.’

5. ‘Use different spaces for different moments in your working day’
Simon Trewin, literary, brand and talent manager and founder of The Garage Press, a vintage letterpress studio
180 Strand, London

‘When I broke away from the 24/7 US corporate environment pre-pandemic, I knew I needed a new space to inhabit where I was going to be surrounded by young, positive, diverse energy.

‘My favourite Soho Works is 180 Strand – the team on the front desk on floor two are truly amazing; they make me feel so supported and welcome every day. I love the light and sense of space in this location: if I want to be corporate, I can sit at a desk. If I want to read quietly, there is always a huge sofa to sink into. And if I want to impress clients, I meet them by the pool at 180 House. All human life is here. It’s the best move I ever made.’
