Which Soho House Holiday Tribe Are You | Soho House

From parents pretending not to be parents at Soho Farmhouse, to (second-time) early adopters rediscovering the cultural side of Berlin, you’ll want to join one of these tribes this spring

Thursday 23 March 2023   By Teo van den Broeke and Samuel Muston

Soho House has more personalities than a group of octuplets born in late June. Each of our clubs is different – be it by design, location or climate – but what unites them all is the fact that they’re always at the centre of cultural life whichever area they’re in. That and they all sell Picantes

So, when it comes to booking a holiday at one of our Houses with bedrooms this spring (and beyond), it’s important to consider which location will suit you best – because one size most definitely does not fit all.

Here’s our fool-proof guide to figuring out which Soho House holiday tribe you belong to. First dibs on ‘year-round sun seeker’.

1. For parents pretending not to be parents: Soho Farmhouse, UK

OK, you won’t see many tractors at this particular farmhouse, but you will see a lot of blissed out-looking people wearing Soho House robes, fresh from an afternoon getting wrinkly at the Lazy Lake. Like some bucolic daydream – a modern-day Petit Trianon, if you will – with two restaurants, a pub, and a small army of staff to minister to your every need, there’s nowhere better to live out your own Master Of The Manor fantasies.

Book: a mid-week mini escape – it’s less busy, so you’ll have the run of the place, and your kids won’t make you feel guilty as they’ll be otherwise occupied at school. Alternatively, just take them with you – there’s a pool, archery and horse riding to keep them busy while you’re slumming it in the spa.

Pack: a pair of wellies and a hungry belly – the food is particularly good.

2. For year-round sun seekers: Soho Warehouse, LA

Downtown LA was once considered the poor relation to its showier neighbours, Beverly Hills and Hollywood. Not so now. Today, the region plays host to some of the coolest spots in the City of Angels, Soho Warehouse included. Drenched in year-round sunshine, come for the rooftop pool and stay for the industry gossip in the Sitting Room downstairs.

Book: a week-long spring break, and use the House as your sun-soaked base from which to explore the best of the Californian capital.

Pack: an air of studied indifference to the celebrities surrounding you. Especially if you pop in for a breather after Coachella…

3. For forever groupies: Soho House Austin

There they go, gliding like swans, beakers of Jack Daniels and Coke in hand, Converse All Stars on feet. You’ll note the perma-tan of the permanently on tour – you could be one too. To say Austin is fond of music is like saying Adele is quite a good singer – the city, which is also the global home of food truck culture, lives and breathes it. And there is quite a lot of it at Soho House Austin: from poolside parties to nights in the Music Room, it is the bleeding edge of the city’s scene.

Book: yes, you could come for SXSW, but everyone does that (for good reason). Instead, visit in late spring, before temperatures hit sweltering, and take advantage of the year-round music programming at the club. And plan a bit of a food tour while you’re at it, starting with Club Cecconi’s on the House terrace.

See: be sure to visit Rich Medina’s pop-up vinyl listening room and bar.

4. For (second-time) early adopters: Soho House Berlin

If your idea of fun is going out on a Friday and coming home on Sunday, you know Berlin will amply satisfy your needs. Truth is, however, that there’s much more to the German capital than its nightlife. Indeed, it’s fair to say that Berlin is having a bit of a second wind, with the burgeoning film festival and exploding art scene putting it firmly back on the creative map. With your cultural quota filled, head to Soho House Berlin – a Bauhaus-shaped gem a stone’s throw from Alexanderplatz in the Mitte district of the city – which includes not only a Cecconi’s, a gym and spa, but also a hammam, so you can sweat between gallery visits/ out your sins.

Book: tickets to see the big Gerhard Richter show at the Neue Nationalgalerie (open from Saturday 1 April) and plan your trip to the House – which features its own Damien Hirst painting of a shark – around that. Art is life, jah

Pack: black clothes, black boots and a pair of sunglasses, whether you intend to get past Sven – who rules the doors of Berghain like Genghis Khan ruled Mongolia – or you simply want to look the part pounding Potsdamer Platz en route to the Neue.

5. For dolce vita deep divers: Soho House Rome

Go for the Caravaggios, stay for the pasta, and give yourself over to the warming embrace of our Roman House, with its balconies overlooking San Lorenzo. If you’re hoping to look the part, you can always go full gladiator and hit up the gym with one of our personal trainers, then unwind in the state-of-the-art cryotherapy chamber in the spa. Alternatively, dive straight into an aperitivo at Cecconi’s Terrazza. La Dolce Vita at its coolest.

Book: a four-day break to coincide with Rome’s birthday celebrations on Natale di Roma on Friday 21 April, when real(ish) gladiators walk the streets.

Pack: a pair of Ray-Ban’s new Mega Wayfarer sunglasses, to ensure you fit in with the sprezzatura-soaked locals.

6. For big appetites on tour: Soho House Mumbai

This ancient city located on the edge of the Arabian Sea is filled with history, culture – and some of the best street food in the world. Get up early to see the city at dawn, then weave through its tight streets taking in the sights and smells. Back at the House, make sure you order the dosas from the breakfast menu, with a side of aloo paratha, curd and pickle. You won’t be disappointed.

Book: if you go in November not only will you be met with deliciously summer-y temperatures, which you can enjoy by our rooftop pool, but you’ll also find the largest literary festival in the world, Tata Literature Live! It takes place between the 9th and 13th of the month.

Pack: a pair of easy wearing shorts with a bit of stretch at the waist, for obvious reasons.

7. For hard bodies with soft souls: Soho Roc House, Mykonos

People say they come to Mykonos for a bit of R&R, but more often than not they come to party by a pool. Fortunately, Soho Roc House is just a hop and a skip away from our club Scorpios. In the day, our guests assume the pose of rest, hanging from the hammocks above the pool and taking part in daily rituals on offer – music and mindfulness are particularly popular. At night, they take part in yet another island ritual of dancing until dawn. The House opens for the season on Thursday 27 April.

Book: a two-week trip any time between mid-June and late August, and you’ll regret not a thing.

Pack: Orlebar Brown – head to toe.

8. For those who’ve found their Pride: Soho House Tel Aviv, Jaffa

The pool at our House in Tel Aviv has been a magnet for the elegant since it opened in 2021. But during Pride Week in June, it’s like a statue park done by Bernini. Everyone is beautiful and everyone seems to be asleep on a sun bed. They’re all smiles, though. With 24 bedrooms its best to book early.

Book: a week-long sunshine break to coincide with Pride 2023, which is on Friday 9 June. There are usually 250,000 visitors to the city during that time so get booking.

Pack: something skimpy.

9. For tight itinerary junkies: Soho House Chicago

Everyone thinks of Chicago as the Windy City, but it has another name too: The City That Works. And it sure works for us. From its many public parks to the fact it has the most advanced transport network in America, it makes it manna from heaven for tourists who like a tight itinerary. After pounding the pavements, you can head back to the House, which is located in a former belt factory in the Fulton Market area – the hub of all things arty.

Book: a road trip. Start your journey in New York at our House in Meatpacking, rent a car, and take to the road to arrive in Chicago just in time for Lollapalooza weekend, which lands between Thursday 3 August and Sunday 6 August.

Pack: a smart Bottega Veneta crossbody in which to carry your itinerary (laminated, of course).

10. For super aesthetes: Soho House Amsterdam

There are quite a few things that Amsterdam is known for: the flowers (the city has a superlative tulip festival), its liberal attitudes (we’ll let you guess what that means), and also the fact that it’s one of the centres of European design. This very much informed our choice of the old 1930s Bungehuis as the location for our first Dutch House. It’s a hymn to Art Deco, but we chose to pack it with cutting-edge local design. As such, you’ll really appreciate it if you’re a bit of a super aesthete (which is just the way we like our aesthetes, FYI).

Book: Amsterdam’s Light Festival will take place for the 12th time across the city this November and will shed rays until January 2024. Book now for a great early rate. You know you’ll be craving a (superlatively tasteful) mini-break by the time winter eventually rolls around.

Pack: a pair of square-rimmed Cutler and Gross frames to ensure you fit in with all the other would-be (and actual) architects and artists flocking to appreciate the design of Soho House Amsterdam.
