Rock up and enjoy live music, film screenings and a rooftop pool at the heart of America’s most thriving (and vibing) city

If Austin isn’t on your list of must-visit destinations yet, it definitely should be. The Texan capital has a lot to offer in the summer: from the buzzing live music scene to kayaking on Town Lake and watching a bat colony from Congress Avenue Bridge (yes, really). Home to an influx of tech start-ups and a diverse art scene, Austin has a welcoming open-minded atmosphere combined with community spirit. And with Austin Pride taking place at the end of the month, it’s an excellent time to visit and soak up all the energy.

Located on South Congress Avenue in close proximity to a variety of stores and Lady Bird Lake, Soho House Austin is a perfect base for exploring the city – but lounging by the rooftop pool all day long is also very much an option. It’s also a great place to start a road trip to Marfa, Big Bend National Park or Lake Travis. But first, here’s a tour around the House.

The architecture and interiors

Set across three floors, the interiors by Soho House Design combine Texas Modernism with a contemporary Spanish aesthetic. It’s furnished with both vintage and specially designed pieces created by local artists and craftspeople. To celebrate Austin’s rich cultural scene, there is a music room with a grand piano, and a screening room with plush velvet armchairs. Adjacent to the cinema, you’ll find a recently launched pop-up vinyl bar, Dante’s HiFi.  As well as music programming curated by producer Rich Medina and a premiere sound system, there’s also has a special cocktail menu and evening entertainment from Tuesday to Saturday.

On the third floor, the Terrace wraps all the way around the building and houses an outdoor lounge-dining area. A wooden pergola hangs overhead, with banquette seating and low-level chairs, and tables set around a large tree in the centre – an ideal setting for al-fresco dining.

The main bar features a carved wooden front, large linen lanterns overhead and natural materials, including stone tables, aged leather seats, and a dark reclaimed timber ceiling. Ceramic lamps found throughout the space have been created by Keith Kreeger, a local Austin ceramicist.

The food

Club Cecconi’s serves contemporary Italian dishes, wood-fired pizzas and much-loved House classics. Don’t forget to stop by for breakfast or Sunday Feast with a few House Tonics.   Members have the option to eat in the more formal dining area or the club lounge and rooftop terrace. For those looking to lounge by the pool  for a few hours, there’s a special poolside menu with light bites and summer drinks.

The bedrooms

The 46 bedrooms sit across the second and third floor, with a modern Spanish-inspired design. They feature limewashed walls, vintage furniture and lighting and fluted minibars, with natural sisal floors over tiled floors. Linen striped curtains match striped fabric headboards on the beds, and some bedrooms have exposed metal structure wardrobes with rails to hang clothes. Others have wardrobes that appear to be carved out of the structure of the room, reminiscent of old architectural techniques from Texan history, with a soft linen curtain at the opening.

The bigger bedrooms all have a Texan-style terracotta floor, a bed that’s integrated with a sofa at the foot, and a copper bathtub. Each one also has an outdoor terrace with a lounge and dining area, daybeds or a combination of both.

The art collection

At Soho House Austin, the art collection is comprised of 72 artists born, based or trained in Texas, with an emphasis on those currently working in Austin. As in the other Houses, the collection is gender neutral and spans museum-level artists, including Austin-based Deborah Roberts through to emerging talent such as Tsz Kam and Santiago Escobedo-Garcia. Outside the screening room is an artwork by Austin duo Teresa Hubbard and Alexander Birchler, which references the history of Texan cinema.

There are also two site-specific murals: one is on the rooftop beside the pool by Desireé Vaniecia, who employs a figurative practice to challenge stereotypes and tell stories of African-American women. The other by Hayley Mitchell is in the inner stairwell that connects each floor. It draws inspiration from ancient mythology, as seen by Modernist artists in the last century.
