Model and founder of Matcha Mafia, Marije Achterbosch, shares her insider tips on where to eat, what to do, and where to party

Wednesday 18 May 2022    By Marije Achterbosch

Amsterdam has a lot to offer for a weekend escape: canal strolls and bike rides in between gazing at gabled facades and Vermeer paintings. But there is also a relaxed energy to the city, which unmistakably makes locals and visitors fall under its spell. Model Marije Achterbosch has lived in Amsterdam for four years and is still in love with it.

Achterbosch chose the city’s Pijp district as a perfect place for her cafe, Matcha Mafia, which she cofounded with her husband, Alexander Dengler – with ceremonial-grade matcha for all your ice latte needs. She tells Soho House how to get to know Amsterdam like a local, and why canals and stroopwafels are worth the hype.

What’s the best thing about living in Amsterdam?
‘I love that it’s small, but it still has a big city feel. I can run 10 errands in one day, work, and even manage to see my friends. We have been living in Amsterdam for about four years and still love it here.’

Favourite way to explore the city?
‘By boat, for sure. This way you can really see all the beautiful canal houses and their pretty details. Often you can even peek inside, because everyone in Amsterdam leaves their curtains open.’

Describe Soho House Amsterdam in three words.
‘Vibey, cosy, fun.’

Tell us about a place only locals know.
