Jo Addy's Awards Season Picks: The Letter Room

A man in uniform on the phone

Up next in our Awards Season Picks series are film director Elvira Lind and producer Sofia Sondervan. In this episode, they speak to writer and New York member Lola Adesioye to discuss their Oscar®-nominated live-action short film, The Letter Room

By Gisselle Babaran

Shot while Elvira Lind was in the third trimester of her pregnancy, the film stars Lind’s husband, business partner and Star Wars actor, Oscar Isaac. He plays the film’s protagonist, Richard – an empathetic prison correctional officer who becomes a little too involved in the private lives of inmates when he gets assigned to the mail room.

Previously a documentarian, the dark prison comedy marks Lind’s first foray into the world of narrative short film, bringing together ‘[her] love for European film-making and American storytelling.’ Taking inspiration from a podcast that told the story of different men all unknowingly writing love letters to the same woman, The Letter Room depicts an unexplored perspective of the prison system.

Watch the conversation between Lind, Sondervan and Adesioye as they discuss the need for connection in these isolating times, Lind’s transition from documentaries to narrative film-making, and the joy of transnational collaboration.
