A unique style, pointed perspective, and contagious authenticity has landed Deon Hinton in the front row of fashion shows and with an invite to every party. This season has the industry insider running between presentations, afterparties and FW22’s favourite IRL shows, from Peter Do to Dion Lee.

We caught up with Hinton to hear about some of his best moments.

Please introduce yourself.
‘Hello, my name is Deon Hinton, and I’m a photographer and creative based here in New York.’

Describe your style.
‘Regarding tonality, my style leans on the neutral side. For overall style, I’d say I’m a hybrid of feminine silhouettes and masculine chic, with elements of Americana streetwear. I’m all over the place, but that’s the beauty of fashion.’

Where do you draw inspiration from?
‘All over. Living in New York, it’s almost impossible to not be inspired. Vintage catalogues, Tumblr, friends, old photos of myself – I’m constantly pulling from the likes of things that surround me.’

How did you get started in fashion?
‘I moved to New York in 2017 after my freshman year of college in Arkansas. I knew I would work in fashion; it’s been one of the only things in life I felt sure of while growing up. New York has an aura that I had never experienced, so I believed in myself and moved here. I started out networking, then built a portfolio of my work and shared it online. This portfolio led to consulting work for brands and allows me to continue to explore the multitudes of space within fashion.’

What number fashion week is this for you?
‘Counting Paris and Milan? This is about my 12th.’

Favourite show this season?

‘By far Peter Do. He’s built a community of people who admire his work, mind, and heart. To see him in his “infancy” is an honour in itself. His play on silhouettes is something that feeds me, and very rarely do I see a collection and think “I need all of this”.’

Favourite look from the Peter Do show?
This one.

Which new designer are you excited about?
‘Theophilio.’

Trends you loved at NYFW?
‘I love the overcoats and suiting this season.’

And one you hope never returns?
‘I’m happy we laid that punchy lime green to rest.’

What surprised you this season?
‘The calmness of the city. Most fashion weeks typically drive New York into a state of chaos; however, this season feels much more grounded and I am here for it.’

What do you wish you’d seen more of at the shows?
‘I say this often, but I wish we took more time to be present with the pieces, the designers, and with each other during fashion week. Often, we’re so rushed with “what’s next” that moments get washed over.’

Favourite show you’ve been to of all time?
‘Louis Vuitton’s show in Miami at this past Art Basel. The energy was unfathomable. I’m truly honoured to see such a special and monumental collection of Virgil.’

If you could go to any show in the world, past or future, what would it be?
‘The Louis Vuitton SS19 show, to have experienced Virgil’s first collection with the house.’
