Our Lead Membership Manager in the city, Kayla Hoppins, shares what our first House in the Pacific Northwest means for both our local and global members

Thursday 5 October 2023 By Kayla Hoppins

A destination for dreamers, makers and doers, Portland is a small city with a big influence. Creatives across design, hospitality, wellness, art and culture all call the Rose City home, and soon we will too with the opening of Soho House Portland.

The new House will take shape in the historic Troy Laundry Building located in the city’s Central Eastside, just a few steps from the Willamette River – an area of Portland known for its bustling restaurants, local dive bars, cosy coffee shops, and friendly neighbourhood feel.

As we prepare to join the local community, while inviting our global members to experience the Pacific Northwest lifestyle rooted in connection, collaboration and creativity, our Lead Membership Manager in the city, Kayla Hoppins, explains why Soho House needs a city like Portland.

Portland has limitless potential
The Pacific Northwest and Portland in particular is multi-dimensional and known for being deeply passionate, a little offbeat and always brimming with new ideas. And I can assure you, having lived there for more than 15 years, that Portland is resilient and has limitless potential. From Wieden + Kennedy’s recent campaign ‘Portland Is What You Make It’ to the Travel Portland campaign ‘This is Portland’, there is an energy and deep desire to propel Portland forward. The creative community here is bold, outspoken, and willing to take risks. As a city we are optimists who continue to create, innovate and inspire, and that’s what Soho House is all about.

The Rose City is rooted in community
Collaboration is at the heart of all we do, and Soho House offers a respite where you can find authentic connections, share new ideas and feel inspired. In partnership with Creative Futures Collective, Soho House Portland is set to launch a mentorship programme to coincide with the opening of the House, which pairs members with young creatives from lower socioeconomic and underrepresented backgrounds.

Soho House Portland is also working directly with local artisans and purveyors to represent the very best of what Oregon has to offer with hyper-local, seasonal menu offerings, Portland roasted coffee, Willamette Valley wines, and more. The House will feature more than 100 artworks from Oregon artists, the largest permanent collection on display in the state. We’re already amplifying the voice of Portland creators with our robust event programming, offering a taste of what’s to come once the House opens its doors.

Members can explore all that the Pacific Northwest has to offer
With day-trip access to Mount Hood, the Oregon Coast and Willamette Valley wine country, Portland is uniquely positioned in the upper left corner of the US. Access to nature, an abundance of seasonal bounty, and a community-first feeling all make Portland a city like no other. Work-life balance and the ability to be immersed in the natural beauty of Oregon draw people from across the globe to live, work, and visit. Sports giants such as Nike and adidas, alongside leading global creative agencies, and world-class restaurants and wineries attract curious and eclectic individuals from around the world. Portlanders are artists, designers, chefs, expats, entrepreneurs, and everything in between. Soho House Portland is a conduit for authentic connection, and an opportunity for both our members and visitors to get to know the real Rose City.
