The Shoreditch House neighbourhood guide

Since we opened Shoreditch House in east London’s historic Tea Building back in 2007, the neighbourhood has become a destination for our members, whether they’re seeking good food, shopping or a night out. The area also has a well-earned reputation as a home for art and culture, with street art and galleries at every turn.

So, while there’s lots to keep you busy when you visit the House, there’s plenty to see, do and eat around the area, too. We turned to some of our most knowledgeable members for their recommendations.

Where to eat

Samuel Bray, hospitality consultant and chef

Brat
‘Brat’s menu focuses on Basque flavours. It serves simple ingredients cooked really well, such as its namesake dish – a whole turbot, grilled over charcoal. If you’re heading to the restaurant for date night, request a cosy table in one of the corners, or sit up at the bar to get a peek into the kitchen.’

Lyle’s 
‘The tasting menu changes each day, with a focus on modern British dishes – order it with the wine suggestions, if you can. The staff are attentive, and the whole place feels lovely and relaxed. A good spot for dinner with friends.’

Rochelle Canteen 
‘This hidden gem feels tucked away, despite being nestled in an old school building just a stone’s throw from the bustle of Redchurch Street. If the sun is shining, ask for a table outdoors – you’ll feel like you’re on holiday.’

Le Labo
‘This modern apothecary-style store on Redchurch Street sells one of my favourite luxury perfume brands. Le Labo has 19 different scents to choose from in its main line – Santal 33 or Thé Noir 29 are solid recommendations – but there’s also the option to create your own personalised fragrance.’
 
Goodhood
‘A concept store that has it all: menswear, womenswear, homeware, and beauty – split over two floors. Goodhood specialises in streetwear, with a curated selection that includes well-known brands, as well as emerging designers.’
 
Labour and Wait 
‘With an emphasis on timeless design and quality, the homeware store offers functional everyday products. I find myself picking up items I never knew I needed until I spot them – like a box of chalk.’

‘A venue of many faces. Bar? Yep. Live music? For sure. Curated DJ nights? Definitely. Karaoke room? Of course. Whether you plan to go to Colours or end up there by chance, you’ll be entertained.’
 
Seed Library
‘I spent a fair number of nights in the previous incarnation of this bar, which was formerly the Miranda at the Ace Hotel. But stumbling across this refurb – now below One Hundred Shoreditch – was a treat. The sticky floors and flashing lights have been replaced with mid-century interior design and a top of the range sound system. Go when you’re in the mood for serious cocktails and un-Shazamable good tunes.’ 
 
Mikkeller Bar London
‘The Scandi-inspired interiors of this craft beer bar are pleasingly rustic – it feels like a great spot for a relaxed first date, or a chilled hangout with friends. With 20 beers on tap, you won’t run out of drinks to try, either.’

‘This is one of my favourite galleries in the UK. It hosts an eclectic roster of the most exciting artistic talents around the world and provides a nice escape from the busyness of London, with a large interior and peaceful outside area. The current exhibition, Night, by Doron Langberg, which is on until Thursday 28 March, is a must-see.’
 
Carlos/Ishikawa
‘Tucked away in Whitechapel is this hidden gem – and a personal favourite of mine. Founder Vanessa Carlos has always been one step ahead. She challenges the aesthetic conventions of conceptual art, and the gallery has offered lots of artists their first solo show, many of whom have gone on to receive international recognition.’
 
Public Gallery 
‘A short walk from the House, this new contemporary art gallery offers a diverse international programme that’s focused on emerging artists – it’s currently hosting Mexico City-based gallery, PEANA.’
