Winter blues? Here are the best Houses around the world to embrace the colder season

Wednesday 28 September 2022    By Anastasiia Fedorova

We’re heading towards the winter months, and there are plenty of reasons to get excited: your favourite woolly jumper under a leather jacket, warm fireplaces and chilly walks, longer darker hours for all your nightlife adventures… you name it. Winter is a perfect time for introspection, slowing down and making time for small pleasures that’ll keep you going until spring. Booking a winter holiday is also a great fix. So, if you’re planning on getting away, here are five Houses around the world that’ll help you find a renewed appreciation for the colder season.

1. Babington House

A 30-minute drive from Bath in the UK, Babington House provides the idyllic rural scenery for cosying up this winter. Located in a 1705 Grade II-listed manor, the House is surrounded by 18 acres of English countryside. It’s a great time to curl on the sofa by the open fire in the Library, or have a hearty meal prepared with seasonal produce from the Walled Garden. And if you’re seeking to relax and recuperate, take a dip in the indoor and outdoor pools, or spend an afternoon at the original Cowshed spa with massages, salt scrubs and a selection of bespoke treatments.

2. Soho House Amsterdam

Throw on your favourite winter coat for a wander around Amsterdam’s renowned canals and hofjes, the Dutch version of secret gardens accessible through hidden doors. Then, check out the city’s multitude of galleries and underground clubs (read our insider’s guide for more). Soho House Amsterdam is the ideal base with its spacious Art Deco bedrooms, screening room with velvet armchairs, and signature wood-fired pizzas at Cecconi’s. We wouldn’t blame you if you never want to leave.

3. Soho House Chicago

Located in a former belt factory, Soho House Chicago combines the city’s industrial heritage and scale with the comfort and buzz of the creative community. Enjoy the rooftop view to the skyscrapers of the Windy City and easy access to all of its delights: from the architecture and art museums to Michelin-calibre food and urban kayaking. Then, sip on a glass of House Tonic while sinking into a red velvet sofa under a grand chandelier after a long day of exploring.

4. Soho House Berlin

A short walk from Alexanderplatz in central Berlin, Soho House is set over eight floors of a restored Bauhaus building. Whether you’ve come to explore the independent bars in Kreuzberg or Charlottenburg, spend 12 hours at the techno temple of Berghain, or enjoy a five-star relaxed brunch, you can be certain that the House will be a great place to return to. The rooms are spacious with king-size beds – plus, room service is there to help you recover from a night on the town. The Store X on the ground floor is the ideal spot to eat, relax, shop and mingle with local creatives, without leaving the warm indoors. Round it off with a drink at the rooftop bar – and repeat if desired.

5. Soho House New York

Thinking of visiting New York for a Champagne-fuelled New Year’s Eve or an impromptu escape from your everyday routine? Soho House has plenty to offer: DUMBO House and Ludlow House for hanging out and three Soho Works locations for business meetings. But the first Manhattan House in the Meatpacking District is simply too iconic not to visit. A stone’s throw from The High Line and the Whitney Museum, it has a spa and fully equipped gym, a rooftop terrace, and spacious rooms with exposed beams and big windows overlooking the city’s bustle – raise a glass to many more winters to come.
