Live performances from some of music’s hottest talents – from Ragz Originale and Sipho to Jordan Mackampa – are coming to a House near you, supported by Bowers & Wilkins

Wednesday 4 October 2023  By Soho House

Another season brings another array of musical talent set to hit our Houses, as the latest series of Soho Rising kicks off with an all-new line-up.

Now in its sixth year, Soho Rising – supported by Bowers & Wilkins – has a proven reputation for bringing some of the brightest new music stars to Soho House members in a series of intimate one-off gigs across our global Houses. With previous performers such as Arlo Parks, Holly Humberstone, Griff and Joy Crookes going on to achieve global acclaim, it’s fair to say that Soho House Head of Music, Dom Chung – who handpicks every act – has a nose for emerging talent.

This season, we kicked off with a show by Gotts Street Park at Brighton Beach House on Thursday 14 September. The group is best known for their singles ‘Lost & Found’ featuring Charlotte Dos Santos, ‘Summer Breeze’ featuring Rosie Low, and their four-track EP Diego. Their signature blend of vintage soul meets alt-R&B has seen them going from strength to strength as shown in their latest single ‘Got To Be Good’.

‘My vision has always been for Soho House to become the home of new music and a genuine talent incubator for the industry,’ Chung says. ‘Soho Rising showcases what we believe are some of the most exciting names in music right now, many of which will undoubtedly be headline talent in the near future.’

You heard it here first. Here are some of the new acts hitting our UK Houses.

Chrissi
180 House, Wednesday 4 October
The Essex-born singer-songwriter burst onto the scene when she was 20 years old with her debut EP, Back In The Day released in 2021. Born to Trinidadian parents, she spent her childhood listening to soca music at home and going to school in Romford where she was the only Black person. Now, she makes music that mixes R&B, soul and pop with an emotional thread – she quotes in her Instagram bio: ‘the goal is to make music that feels like a cuddle tehe.’ She gave her debut performance when supported by her brother BERWYN at All Points East festival last year and released her latest single, ‘Love Me In Chapters’, in June this year.

SIPHO
White City House, Thursday 5 October
Since producing his first EP in 2016, SIPHO has become known for his soulful voice and music that spans rock, soul, electronic pop, and R&B. Now signed to the west London label Dirty Hit, the Birmingham-born artist has offered introspective ideas influenced by his faith, and challenged perceptions around Black male identity and artistry. His most popular singles include ‘Bodies’, ‘We Ain’t’ and his self-produced EP And God Said, and in early September he released his new single ‘Lock It In (No Regrets)’. He’s due to release his debut LP, Prayers & Paranoia next month. Catch him first at Soho Rising.

In 2018, he stepped out with his own sounds, a mixture of R&B, alté and indie-rock across the songs ‘Nature’, ‘4am’ and ‘WOAH’ mixtape, and his MiniKingz collaboration ‘Iconicy’. The Tottenham native has now released his first album, Bare Sugar, available as a vinyl, which can be purchased with some personalised merchandise too if that’s your jam.

Ama Lou
180 House, Monday 23 October
This year, London-born singer-songwriter and all-round creative Ama Lou – born Ama Louisa John – has been attracting attention in the music scene with her R&B and soul sound. She made her debut in 2016 with the single ‘TBC’, and is now best known for hits such as ‘Tried Up’ and ‘Not Always’, which – true to her usual style – embrace youth culture through intelligent storytelling. You can expect more and more from this ever-evolving talent; her debut album, I Came Home Late, was just released and the next one is on its way. And in September, she won the Breakthrough Musician award at the Soho House Awards 2023.

Sekou
180 House, Tuesday 31 October
Sekou rose to fame when he walked into a church, sat down at the piano, played and sang as he recorded himself. He uploaded this video, followed by many more, on his Instagram and TikTok accounts. He then garnered industry attention at only 16 years old when he was signed by music label Good Soldier Records off the back of a video where he was singing in a carpark. Now he has more than 100,000 followers across his social platforms, he released his debut EP Out Of Mind earlier this year, and sold out a London show in August. Be one of the first to catch this Leicester-born rising star at 180 House.

Hemlocke Springs
Soho House 40 Greek Street, Wednesday 8 November
American singer-songwriter Hemlocke Springs blew up when her song ‘Girlfriend’ went viral on TikTok in 2022 and she released her first EP just last week. Her style draws from lo-fi and indie pop, influenced by the likes of Avicii and Lorde – which was in fact the reason she added an ‘e’ to her name, originally just Hemlock. With no formal music training of any kind, her natural talent has been reaching audiences worldwide and now you can catch her at 40 Greek Street next month.

Durand Bernarr
180 House, Sunday 19 November
Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Durand Bernarr is playful, witty and sonically imaginative. He was introduced to music before he knew it with a mother who was a music teacher and vocal coach, and a father who was an audio engineer, working for the likes of Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Whitney Houston, and more. At 16, Bernarr got his first taste of the industry when he accompanied his father on a tour for Earth, Wind & Fire as a production assistant. In 2008 he began posting his music on YouTube, and in 2020 he released his debut album Dur&, which he followed up with his second album, Wanderlust, in 2022. Bernarr will be bringing his storytelling songs to 180 House at the end of November, so watch this space.

Jordan Mackampa
Shoreditch House, Tuesday 28 November
British-Congolese musician, Jordan Mackampa, released his debut album Foreigner in March 2020. He moved to London with his mother when he was just a baby and is bilingual with French as his first language. Mackampa started playing the guitar and composing music at the age of 12. In 2016, his self-released Physics EP dropped, followed by Tales From The Broken in 2017, signing a record deal with AWAL Recordings later that year. This year, he has released his new single ‘Proud Of You’ and has an upcoming tour in 2024.
