New Vibrations with Alex Lam

As part of Soho House Hong Kong’s second anniversary celebrations, local member Alex Lam threw a House Party in the Pool Room with a diverse lineup of friends and music. We catch up with the actor and musician to get the lowdown on the night

Soho House Hong Kong is celebrating its second anniversary this year, and as part of a whole weekend of festivities, musician, actor and local member Alex Lam hosted a House party with his music collective at our outpost in China. Lam and his friends took to the performance space in the Pool Room for a night of dancing, following an easing of Hong Kong’s prolonged COVID-19 restrictions.

Lam kicked the night off with groove pop band Whizz, before jumping on stage to perform an energetic live set with his friends Coverdog and Shimica Wong. To close, local Latin musician Chris Polanco and his Azúcar Latina Band brought things to a fabulous reggaeton-infused peak.

We caught up with Alex Lam to get the lowdown on the night.

How did the House Party go? Did the sets go down well?
‘The night was ideal! Especially since it’s been so long since we’ve had live music and performance. We started at sunset with Whizz laying down groovy, laidback funk vibes for everyone to warm up and wind down to. By the time me and my friends Coverdog and Shimica went on, you could feel the crowd swelling around the stage ready to party. I threw my hands up as the first notes of my single “Good Vibration” sounded and it was off to the races. And by the time Azúcar Latina went on it was danceteria!’

How did you go about curating the performances for the night? Did the different DJs and artists work well together?
‘That was our internal theme: find a group of friends to play together! DJ Chef Topher, Whizz, Coverdog, Azucar Latina and I are all good friends, so although our styles are different, we gel because of our friendship.’

What was the crowd like?
‘So many beautiful girls and guys! It was a real joy and headache to perform because everywhere you turned there were people having fun. Definitely not enough time to talk to everyone. But lots of smiles and laughter.’

What were the highlights of the night?
‘My personal highlight was the response I received from my original songs. Coverdog and I rearranged a lot of them to fit the vibe at Soho House and I think we succeeded. We learned that the Soho House crowd definitely like fast, high-energy, funky songs. We will remember that for next time. Perhaps we can take this show to other Soho Houses when travelling opens up – Hong Kong House represent!’

The party was part of Soho House Hong Kong’s second anniversary celebrations. What have been your favourite moments from the first two years of Soho House Hong Kong?
‘Hands down this was the best event I’ve been to at the House. I wish I could have seen Kiri T, Moon Tang and Gareth Tong perform downstairs, but I was performing at the time. But another memorable night I remember was the Tarantino-themed Halloween party here!’

Is there anything else we should know about the House Party?
‘Just a shout out to the Soho House Hong Kong team for throwing this weekend of local talent and music. It must have been a lot of organising, planning and hard work. Thanks for letting us play!’
