Little Simz wins Mercury Prize for Album of the Year

British rapper Little Simz won the Mercury Prize for Album of the Year last night at the annual music ceremony for her coming-of-age album, Sometimes I Might Be Introvert. 

The 28-year-old artist was among 12 acts who were in the running for the prestigious accolade, including the likes of Harry Styles and Sam Fender. She was presented the award, which comes with a £25,000 prize sum, by DJ Jamz Supernova at the show at London’s Hammersmith Apollo. 

‘We all made incredible albums,’ said Simz when accepting the award on stage. ‘We all changed people’s lives with our music, and that’s the most important thing.’

The win comes after she received her first Brit Award earlier this year for Best Newcomer, despite her debut album dropping seven years ago.

Little Simz released Sometimes I Might Be Introvert in September 2021, hosting a private launch party at Soho House 76 Dean Street in London. Friends, family and fellow artists – including Soho House members Mahalia, Stormzy and Joy Crookes – gathered to celebrate the release of Simz’s fourth studio album. 

On the night, guests sipped cocktails named after tracks on the album, including ‘The Garden’ and ‘Point And Kill’, and tucked into the House’s famous Dirty Burgers. There were complimentary books on offer too, carefully selected by Simz, which included novels by Bernardine Evaristo and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. 

She later took the mic to perform some of the strongest songs on the album, including ‘Woman’ and ‘Rollin Stone’, and called upon collaborator and Nigerian artist Obongjayar to help her sing the Afrobeat-infused anthem ‘Point And Kill’, which he features on.
