There’s little more distinct than the smooth, slightly sweet and earthy bite of an Old Fashioned. The strong oaky notes of whisky that’s tempered with a touch of sugar, grounded with herbal, spicy bitters and topped with a twist of aromatic citrus has made this drink a mainstay since the 19th century.
Considered one of the oldest cocktails in the world, the first iteration of the spirits-based drink dates back to the early 1800s. There are many accounts that attribute the first uses of the term ‘cocktail’ directly to early versions of the drink, with its original description of ‘Whiskey Cocktail’ before it became popularised as an Old Fashioned in the 1880s.
In honour of all things Old Fashioned, November has been the drink’s dedicated month. The annual celebration began in Paris in 2015, and continues to be spearheaded by the likes of Woodford Reserve as a way for fans worldwide to celebrate and continue the evolution of the cocktail.
This year, Woodford Reserve is helping members mark the month-long occasion. Throughout November, select Houses will serve a special Old Fashioned menu, available from 5pm. It will include a Classic Old Fashioned, staying true to the original, spirit-forward recipe with Woodford Reserve bourbon, Angostura bitters and sugar syrup garnished with orange, in addition to a Oaxaca Old Fashioned. A House favourite globally, the Oaxaca iteration incorporates reposado tequila and mezcal, along with agave nectar for an Old Fashioned that packs extra punch and leans into the smoky earthiness of the original recipe.
Members can enjoy House interpretations of the signature drink across our global clubs, as well as original creations from local bar teams, each offering a unique take inspired by its setting. Keep an eye out for cocktail masterclasses at your local House, where you’ll discover the secrets to crafting the perfect Old Fashioned.
