Friday 10 June 2022     By Anastasiia Fedorova

Soho House Festival is back after a two-year break – this time with two separate dates in west London’s Gunnersbury Park. For over a decade, this has been the Thursday to look forward too – and we’re keen to keep the tradition going.

You know the drill: all the food, drink and entertainment included in the ticket price. All the House cocktails and grilled lobster your heart desires, a crowd to turn the looks and enjoy like there is no tomorrow, a seriously exciting music programme – and all for a good purpose, too. This year, we’re partnering with the Jamal Edwards Self Belief Trust in memory of Jamal, a beloved and much missed member of the Soho House family.

Below is the breakdown of the all-star Thursday line-up. You won’t want to miss this.

Primal Scream

Over the past three and a half decades, Primal Scream have embraced everything from psychedelic pop to degenerate rock’n’roll; euphoric rave to industrial gloom. They have made records with George Clinton and Kate Moss, invited Mani of the Stone Roses and Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine into the fold, survived narcotic oblivion, personal trauma and the death of beloved guitarist Robert ‘Throb’ Young – capturing the mood of the nation several times over while doing it.

Becky Hill

A hit machine since her teens, Becky Hill has forged her own particular path to fame. As successful as a songwriter as she is as an artist, as fierce behind the scenes as she is on stage and as credible as she is commercial, the 27-year-old has become one of Britain’s most successful musicians on her own terms. Only Honest On The Weekend, her years-in-the-making debut album arrives on the heels of the gold-selling compilation, Get To Know, which turned Hill – who has written 10 Top-40 hits (including eight platinum records) and has over 1.75 billion streams as a singer on Spotify alone – into a household name.

Fatboy Slim

Norman Cook, better known as dance music legend Fatboy Slim, is a Grammy and Brit awards-winning artist who has been a pivotal part of British pop culture for the past three decades. Moreover, these days Fatboy Slim sets are complex audio-visual productions in their own right, with visuals synchronised to the artful mash-ups. We can’t wait to witness the sampling mastery and lose it to the earthshattering sounds of ‘Right Here, Right Now’ and ‘Weapon of Choice’.

An award-winning DJ and champion for R&B music worldwide, Trevor Nelson is also a radio broadcaster who currently spans two of the BBC’s most popular music networks. He hosts Trevor Nelson’s Rhythm Nation for BBC Radio 2 and Trevor Goes Old Skool for BBC Radio 1Xtra. Sports Team

Sports Team have been described as one of the most raucous, electrifying and chaotic acts in the UK. Their Mercury Prize-nominated debut album, Deep Down Happy, was released in the summer of 2020. It delivered on all the bold claims and confirmed their place at the head of a new wave of young guitar acts. Documenting modern Britain in all its messy complexity, as well as their own lives as young tyros fine-tuning their plan to ravish the charts, their songs are both affectionate and disdainful – much like the band’s oft-cited folk hero, John Betjeman, whose poems and documentaries poked around suburban habitats with appalled fascination.

Wet Leg

Their debut single, ‘Chaise Longue’, may have only been released in June 2021, but its dry wit, Mean Girls nod and thumping indie-disco beat turned it into a runaway hit. Rhian and Hester of Wet Leg first met at college on the Isle of Wight, where they grew up. The pair decided to collaborate after a long hazy summer of rolling around fields and playing festivals with a couple of different bands. Their eponymous debut album rolls through such relatable things as dancing, guitars, humour, sex, disenchantment, parties, break-ups – not to mention a woozy ode to being kicked out of a shop for being ‘totally pickled’.

Self Esteem

Rebecca Taylor – aka Self Esteem – writes songs that highlight the importance of being our unapologetic selves. Each track on her most recent album, Prioritise Pleasure, handles difficult themes with nuanced perspective, all comforted and counter-balanced with an array of rhythmic flourishes that speak to the eclectic nature of her experience and influence. Fusing powerful performance with an endearing sense of humour, she is a perfectly relatable pop star for our times.

Sam Tompkins

A shy kid from the south coast, Sam Tompkins discovered his gift while busking and has never once looked back. His introduction to performing came from performing on the streets of Brighton as part of a dare on his 16th birthday. What started as a one-off quickly turned into an itch he couldn’t scratch. It’s not been a straight-forward journey, but it’s already scaling mountainous heights – Elton John and Bastille are fans, pop phenomenon Bebe Rexha has co-signed his work and Justin Bieber is a prominent supporter.

Lola Young

Fiercely independent and possessing a true artistic vision, 21-year-old Lola Young has all the potential, spirit and individuality to become the UK’s next big talent. Growing up in South London with an inherent sense of direction and personal drive, Young immersed herself in music. She started writing songs aged 11. By the time she was 13, she had already competed in – and won – a national open mic competition and appeared on a television show that gave young teens a sense of what life working in the music industry was like. At the heart of Lola’s live set was the music she had written. Rather than distance herself from the songs she wrote when young as many musicians do, Lola embraces the emotional and musical journey she’s been on – and invites us all along for the ride.

The Dinner Party

From serenading the dimly-lit corners of East London pubs to courting interest from major record labels, agents, promoters and publishers, The Dinner Party burst gloriously forth into the guitar music renaissance in just a few short months. Conceived during a wine-stained evening in Brixton, the name embodies a musical ethos and aesthetic of decadence, mystery, spectacle and charm. Finding artistry in the intersection of the beautiful, sublime and grotesque, the band are guided by their favourite Romantic poets and Gothic novelists. Their net of inspiration is cast across artists and genres – from Kate Bush and David Bowie to glam rock and new wave, coupled with unexpected moments of twelve-bar blues, classical overture and heavy synth breakdowns.
