With insights from the creatives behind ‘Oppenheimer’ and panel talks from leading fashion names, here’s a round-up of last week’s event, powered by Porsche

Tuesday 7 November 2023 By Soho House Photography by AJ Woomer and Roger Kisby

Last week, our second Soho Summit landed in Los Angeles. Guests were treated to keynote talks by Hollywood leaders, workshops from Soho Visionaries artists and an unforgettable party, all set across our LA outposts: Soho House West Hollywood, Soho House Holloway, Soho Warehouse and Soho Home Melrose Studio. They were transported between the Houses in cars provided by Porsche, including the fully electric Taycan.

The event followed our inaugural Soho Summit, held back in April at Soho Farmhouse in the UK. Creative minds like Michèle Lamy, Sir Paul Smith and Andrew Scott came together for inspiring conversations, alongside art installations, artist-led workshops, and an energetic performance by Anne-Marie.

This time around, over three sun-drenched days, members enjoyed conversations on creativity and culture from Jeremy Scott, Arianne Phillips and Catherine Opie. There were also screenings of Killers Of The Flower Moon and Rustin, a masterclass for first-time filmmakers with Riley Keough and Gina Gammell, and playful workshops from artists David Horvitz, Anna Carey, and Dané Estes.

To ensure the summit was as accessible as possible, each talk included ASL interpreters, ramps and handrails on the main stage, with closed captioning on all of the cinema screenings. Additionally, our panellists, facilitators and leadership team began their sessions with a visual description of themselves to accommodate those who are blind or have low vision.

Wednesday 1 November
At Soho House West Hollywood

Day one started at Soho House West Hollywood, with a ‘Hollywood Access’ panel in the White Box. Soho House’s very own Director of Film and Entertainment, Jo Addy, kicked off proceedings by introducing Kaitlyn Yang, CEO of Alpha Studios and cofounder of 1IN4 Coalition; Sumi Parekh, executive director of Group Effort Initiative; Tracey Bing, producer and head of content for Rideback Rise; Tahirah Gooden, manager of Original Studio Films for Netflix; and Elaine Hall, access coordinator and founder of The Miracle Project. Moderator Eryn Brown, partner of Entertainment 360 and cofounder of 1IN4 Coalition, led the conversation, which explored issues surrounding access in Hollywood, and ways to create systemic and sustainable change for underrepresented groups within the industry.

Over the course of the day, the cinema saw the meeting of creative minds. The team behind the Oscars® Best Picture front-runner, Oppenheimer, discussed their creative process and collaboration. The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Feinberg, Rebecca Keegan and Tyler Coates took a deep dive into 2024 Oscars® race predictions with Soho House’s Jo Addy. And later that evening, members enjoyed an advanced Netflix QUEUE screening of Rustin with an introduction by producer Tonia Davis.

At Soho Home Studio
Soho Home Studio on Melrose played host to two workshops from Soho Visionaries artists. David Horvitz led a playful session on printmaking using unorthodox materials, including sumi ink and edible food like SPAM® and udon noodles. Members relished the chance to play with food, even involving fruit from Cecconi’s impressive cheese spread. After that, Anna Carey, an artist with works in our Soho Warehouse bedrooms, taught members her process for building miniature models of mid-century buildings. The group photographed their own creations, taking home Polaroids of their architectural masterpieces.

At Soho House Holloway
Day one culminated in a private dinner on Soho House Holloway’s rooftop, set against a backdrop of the Hollywood Hills. Hosted by Soho House CEO, Andrew Carnie, the intimate dinner featured new dishes from the House’s menu, alongside a live performance by Maeta. Later in the night came a truly iconic cabaret performance from Tiffany Haddish, titled Tiffany’s ‘Music Box’. The comedian and performer shared stories of her upbringing, alongside a sultry twist on some classic nursery rhymes.

Thursday 2 November
In the Soho Warehouse Garden

As members entered the garden on Thursday morning, they were greeted by a custom-painted 2001 Porsche Boxster Art Car by artist Robynn Sanders. Next came a series of keynote conversations with inspiring creatives. War Pony co-directors Gina Gammell and Riley Keough discussed the intricacies of their creative partnership and the search that led them to the film’s story. Photographer Kennedi Carter explained the role that self-portraiture played in the healing process following the birth of her son. And artist Catherine Opie and curator Erin Christovale discussed Opie’s 40-year career capturing queer life, urban transformation, and political movements.

In the Soho Warehouse Drawing Room
Soho Visionaries, a joint effort between Soho House and Porsche to amplify artists who are shifting the agenda, brought local artist Dané Estes to the House for a collaborative workshop. Through this, members were able to discover the power of abstract painting driven by intuition. Later on, artists Patrick Vogel and Brian Bress, Vellum LA curator and creative director Sinziana Velicescu and Soho House’s Art Collection Manager Anakena Paddon discussed the philanthropic side of digital art and the future of virtual collectibles.

The day culminated in a freeing workshop with Jessalyn Brooks, the artist behind Soho House Holloway’s rooftop mural. Attendees were blindfolded and encouraged to move their bodies freely, while listening to a harp performance. Following this, they put pencil to paper, creating self-portraits that explored themes of archetypes and the body.

The Soho Warehouse Garden Party
After two days full of connection, challenging ideas and creative play came Thursday night’s closing party, held in the garden. Music was provided by Gabriels, a British-American three-piece band made up of Jacob Lusk, Ryan Hope and Ari Balouzian. The performance was one of our favourite moments from the entire summit: lead singer, Lusk, got the entire crowd singing along, with 9-1-1 cocktails, courtesy of our friends at Porsche, in hand.

Friday 3 November
At Soho House Holloway

On Friday morning, two fashion icons – Jeremy Scott and Arianne Phillips – brought the summit to a close with one final, inspirational talk. The pair swapped tales of Oscars®  outfits and touring with Madonna (Phillips has previously dressed the superstar for six world tours). The long-time friends also shared their fashion philosophy: the inspiring sentiment that it should always be ‘a reflection of culture at any given time’.
