Soho House Tel Aviv, Jaffa
From unique landscape works to the local history of the Bauhaus movement, the Soho House Tel Aviv, Jaffa collection is a beautiful way to better understand the city
The House art collection focuses on artists from Israel and the surrounding areas. There are internationally renowned, museum-level artists such as Elad Lassry, Tal R and Ilit Azoulay, as well as up-and-coming talent including Shai Yehezkelli and Maayan Elyakim.
Part of the collection celebrates the Bauhaus movement with its aesthetic portrayed through balanced forms, abstract shapes and blocks of colour. We could not have created an art collection in Israel without paying tribute to its unique place in design history and the fact it contains one of the largest concentrations of Bauhaus architecture in the world. When the Nazis expelled the Bauhaus from Berlin, they couldn’t have imagined that the school’s design aesthetic would find a warm embrace in the outstretched terraces of the first modern Jewish city.
The rest of the collection is a celebration of the country itself – figurative works that capture the spirit of the people; sitting on a beach, watching a sunset or children playing in the water. In various different mediums, there are works of fruit and foliage that emphasise the abundance of the land. Finally, there is an emphasis on photography. As a country with a rich photographic heritage and therefore a dominant place in the contemporary art scene, there are works by key photographers such as Micha Bar-Am, Sigalit Landau, Yael Bartana, David Adika, Oded Balilty, and Ori Gersht. The Soho House Tel Aviv, Jaffa art collection aims to encapsulate the history, the people and the land.
