Soho Works is now stateside

Our shared workspace concept, Soho Works, has opened in Brooklyn's DUMBO neighbourhood
By Corinna Burford

Our first Soho Works location in North America is officially open for business. Located at 55 Water Street in DUMBO, Soho Works is a place for members from our creative community to work, meet and collaborate featuring meeting rooms of all sizes, private offices, dedicated desks, spacious lounge areas and a curated program of events designed to inspire, educate and facilitate connections.

With special pricing available to Soho House members, a Soho Works membership grants you access to our shared workspaces in London’s White City and Shoreditch neighbourhoods, with future openings planned in London, New York and Brooklyn, Los Angeles and Hong Kong. You can submit a membership inquiry
here, and read on below to learn more about what’s to love about our newest Soho Works space:

A schedule of inspiring events
Every month, you can expect a selection of workshops, conversations and networking opportunities, designed to help you grow your career and meet fellow creative thinkers. During our soft launch period we hosted a discussion with the founders of Warby Parker and Harry’s Razors, a conversation on diversity in media, fashion and art with publicist Sandrine Charles, who founded her own consulting company, along with a panel featuring female founders in the culinary and beverage worlds including Jen Pelka of The Riddler, Sierra Tishgart of Great Jones, and Kerry Diamond, the editorial director of Cherry Bombe.

We kicked off March with a visit from curator and critic Antwaun Sargent, who discussed his book
The New Black Vanguard. Coming up, we’re looking forward to a session on conscious marketing with Danielle Henry, Coca Cola North America’s group head of integrated content, as well as a workshop on building strong and lean teams, with the founders of AYR, Sculpt Society, Kule and Sabah.

Dedicated workspaces and meeting rooms
All of our workspaces are designed to encourage creativity, collaboration and productivity. Located in the same building as DUMBO House, Soho Works includes open-plan lounge areas for hot-desking, as well as dedicated desks and private office spaces for small- and medium-size businesses. ‘We wanted to boost creativity and social connections by fostering moments of interaction within the space,’ says Soho Works senior interior designer Luana Lima. ‘In the lounge, for example, the green pantry banquette weaves in and out to create different moments of intimacy, allowing groups to work together or individuals to work solo.’ The space also features phone booths, printers, podcast equipment, and bookable meeting rooms – some of which have videoconferencing capabilities.

A place to host your own event
For all-day meetings or small events, the Studio can accommodate up to 40 people, while our open Loft space is perfect for large receptions, live podcasts, private parties or panel discussions. It includes stadium–style seating for presentations, a boardroom table and a screen for meetings and intimate zones for breakout groups, plus you can order catering options from the Cecconi’s and DUMBO House menus.

Tools for recording your podcast
If you’re looking for somewhere to record your podcast, we have everything you need to get started, including a RODECaster Pro production studio, Sony MDR-7506 Headphones and Electro-Voice RE20 mics. Our recording equipment can be booked for use in any of our meeting rooms, so you can record alone, with a group or bring an audience. Last month, the podcast Black Girls Texting recorded a live episode from our Loft space with photographer Dana Scruggs. You can expect more live shows in the coming months.

Interiors where design meets function
The interiors of our Soho Works spaces balance functionality with our signature Soho House style. A play on a 1970s–style New York loft, the design for Soho Works was inspired by other industrial buildings in the area, and includes original details like distressed brick walls, concrete floors and exposed timber structures. The furniture takes cues from the American craft movement and mid-century modern design, incorporating accents like burled wood veneer, brushed brass and polished chrome.

At the same time, our designers wanted to create spaces that were actually conducive to work. ‘We took every detail into consideration to ensure that our members and guests have the most productive day at work possible,’ says Lima. ‘We created a line of custom furniture where almost everything has integrated power, and every surface was tested to make sure it feels comfortable and cozy, but also performs functionally if you are using a mouse or need a writing surface.’

An art collection highlighting fresh talent
To keep you inspired during your work day, you’ll find an extensive collection of artworks by emerging, mid-career and established local and international artists. ‘We chose pieces that said something about the city itself – its vibrancy and energy,’ says Katie Heller, Soho House’s senior art project manager. ‘The forms and colors are bold, intense and visually stimulating,’ she adds, highlighting works by Turkish-born abstract painter Hayal Pozanti, surrealist conceptual artist Oliver Clegg and the video, photo and digital trio Leo Gabin.

Treats to keep you fueled
For fuel during your work day, we have a selection of continental breakfast options available in the morning, along with coffee, tea and espresso throughout the day, plus fridges to store your lunch. If you’re using any of our meeting rooms, we also offer catering for breakfast and lunch from Cecconi’s and DUMBO House – just ask for the menu at reception.

There’s more to come…
We have more Soho Works locations coming soon, with workspaces at 10 Jay Street in DUMBO, 875 Washington Street in the Meatpacking District in Manhattan, 180 The Strand in London and 9000 Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood in LA all opening later this year. As with 55 Water Street, all of our other Soho Works spaces are located within walking distance of a Soho House, and membership to any Soho Works location gives you access to all of our workspaces around the world.
