In this year’s list, inspectors were impressed by Soho House Amsterdam’s ability to distinguish itself among thousands of hotels, and praised its rich history and architecture. Taking residence in the landmark Bungehuis building, which was originally built in 1934 as the offices for a prominent trading company, the Art Deco landmark stands as a rijksmonument (a Netherlands national heritage site). With its functionalist design, stone facade, and intricate 1930s detailing, it embodies the Dutch capital’s interwar period spirit of commerce and modernism. By the 1970s, it had become part of the University of Amsterdam, housing the Faculty of Humanities and later becoming a symbol of academic life in the city.
In 2015, students famously occupied the building to protest education cuts and the planned sale of the site. That protest marked the close of its university era before the space was reborn as Soho House Amsterdam in 2018, preserving much of the building’s original features such as restored timber panelling and stained-glass windows.
