Behind the art and design of Soho Farmhouse Ibiza

Art and Design At Farmhouse Ibiza

Set in a traditional Spanish farmhouse, our first club on the White Island pays homage to the creative community that makes it such a special place

Though Ibiza may be best known as a mecca for partying, beyond the superclubs and the San Antonio strip lies a close community of local artists, drawn to the island for its natural beauty and vibrant culture. Soho Farmhouse Ibiza, opening on Friday 18 July, is located in the heart of this creative circle, in the bohemian village of Santa Gertrudis.

And as we open our doors to members, we take a look at the impact that the creative community has had on the Farmhouse – from the interior design to the carefully curated art collection.

The design
Situated in a traditional Spanish farmhouse on a working olive grove, our Ibiza club was a completely unique project for our design team, led by Senior Designer Sophie Baker. Spanning 2,246 sq m of countryside, the goal was to create a proper retreat for members; a place where they can really relax and recharge.

The main Farmhouse itself is exactly what you would envision: white facades, rustic finca-inspired architecture, and terracotta floors. Of course, the space was given a Soho House touch too, with interiors intended to feel welcoming and comforting, while maintaining some of that rustic, Spanish aesthetic.

‘The building originated as a family home, and there’s a real warmth to it from the moment you walk in. It has a domestic feel, despite its scale,’ Baker explains. ‘Given the building’s inherent charm, our aim was to avoid altering its foundation much at all. We’ve retained original features like the high ceilings, terracotta floors and wooden beams, which have been lovingly preserved since the building’s inception. That was very important to us.’

When it came to designing each space, Baker and her team took inspiration from the natural beauty of the island. ‘We selected the colours, materials and textures carefully,’ she says. ‘We kept a serene, rustic farmhouse aesthetic – lots of wood and organic textures in the furniture, curated antiques, and delicate lighting. But we also incorporated subtle references to Ibiza’s bohemian history, using 1970s antiques and coloured glass to add energy into the otherwise calming environment.’

Particular attention was paid to the 14 bedrooms and two villas at the Farmhouse. Each offers the amenities members recognise from a Soho House bedroom – well-stocked minibars, Cowshed and Soho Skin essentials, and comfortable beds – as well as some thoughtful additions to beat the summer heat, like freezers to store cold drinks and ice cream.

‘We also really wanted to celebrate local craftsmanship in the bedrooms, so we sourced these beautiful plaster and ceramic lamps from Spanish artisans,’ says Baker. ‘The beds come in two styles: a linen-covered four-poster and a rattan headboard with a starburst design, which again echoes Ibiza’s vibrant spirit and history. We also layered silk rugs in locally inspired floral patterns, with lots of linen and leather upholstery. It’s all about creating warmth through texture and materiality.

‘For the colour palette of the bedrooms, we reflected the natural surroundings with hints of orange and green – they make the space feel inviting and respect the original warm wood tones of the architecture. We added glass ceiling lights, too, so that the rooms feel bright and airy.’

The Farmhouse is a place dedicated to wellness, with the Soho Health Club offering spa treatments, a fully equipped gym, yoga deck, sauna, steam room, and ice baths. Baker’s team wanted this same feeling of relaxation to carry through to the bathrooms, too. ‘They feel very luxurious,’ she says. ‘We added smoked terracotta floors and hand-applied neutral plaster walls. The vanities are made from hand-carved timber with intricate lattice designs, which pay homage to the island’s traditional baskets.’

The art collection
When curating Soho Farmhouse Ibiza’s art collection, Chief Art Director Kate Bryan knew she needed to approach the local creative community as a collaborator, not an outsider. ‘Our mission was clear: to showcase a diverse range of artists all of whom have a connection to the island, whether born, based or trained in the Balearic Islands,’ she explains of her process, which involved communicating with local art foundations and galleries. ‘It’s about experiencing the place through the artists’ eyes.’

That ethos echoes throughout the collection, which spans sculptural installations, light projections, ceramic frescoes, and painted works. Seventy artworks by 21 artists are on permanent display across the site, from large-scale paintings by Mallorca based Grason Mikal Ratowsky to earthy abstract works by an artist with a studio close by, Malvina Kang Hughes. The collection spans a wide array of media, including several textile-based pieces, such as Adrián Martínez’s dyed woolen work and a large-scale tapestry in carritx and esparto by Adriana Meunié, along with three artists (Mar Guerrero, Georgia Merton and Cristina Stolhe) who demonstrate a fascination with the boundaries of photography. Stefan Brüggemann, whose work is already a firm fixture in the London Soho Houses and has a studio neighbouring the property, has also contributed two paintings wrought from gold leaf.

Three large installations also work to define the Farmhouse. Inside the Library, members will find the first sculptural ceiling installation in the global art collection by Natalie Rich, comprising more than 200 handmade pieces. Outside the main building resides Jesús de Miguel’s largest sculpture to date – a two metre tall Inmudus inspired by the Fameliars, a magical, mythical creature from Ibicenca folklore. In the gardens is the first outdoor light art piece in the collection by Javier Riera. Made over the course of several months plotting the skies, the light projection imagery cycles through a seven-minute sequence.
