Why there’s a lot more to Music City than just country

Wednesday 9 February 2022   By Natalie Osborne

Natalie Osborne is a Nashville-based photographer, artist manager, and former creative director of Downtown Music Publishing, a leading music rights management company with a catalogue spanning more than 100 years, including everything from George Gershwin and The Beatles to One Direction and Benny Blanco. Additionally, Natalie is the younger sister to multi-Grammy nominated and Country Music Awards winning Duo of the year, Brothers Osborne. So, if anyone was to guide us through the pop landscape of Nashville, it would be her.

Osborne has created a playlist of tunes that have an attachment to the Nashville music scene, all of them with an artist, producer, performer or songwriter hailing from Music City. So, without further ado, we place our ears in her capable hands.

‘If you’re not super familiar with the Nashville music scene, my hope is that when you listen to this playlist, you’ll be surprised by the amount of music you know, but didn’t know it came out of Nashville,’ says Osborne. ‘What makes this city so fascinating is that at any given moment you could be sitting next to someone who produced, wrote, sang, recorded or played on one of these songs. But if you’re familiar with the Nashville music scene, my hope is that you discover something new on this playlist – we’re surrounded by endless talent in this town.

‘One of the songs that best represents Nashville on this playlist to me is “Fields Of Knowing” by Nashville’s supergroup, Skyline Motel, made up of Sarah Buxton, Kate York, Daniel Tashian and Ian Fitchuk – some of Nashville’s best songwriters and producers. It is so Nashville when creatives who are predominantly behind the scenes turn out to be some of the best artists in town. When Skyline Motel plays a show in town, the big names become fans in the crowd. They are the artist’s artists.

‘You’ll also find one of the biggest pop songs of 2022 on this playlist: “ABCDEFU” by Nashville artist, Gayle, written with Nashville songwriters. And of course, I had to sprinkle in some of the classics that helped shape Music City into what it is today, like “Walking After Midnight” and “9 To 5”. This playlist is a glimpse into my city and my heart. I hope you enjoy it.’
