Film Lab brings together the world’s greatest talent in writing and film-making to take short film scripts to the next level. In the workshop and mentoring session, industry leaders – from Oscar® winners to cult indie directors – pass on what they know to the next generation.
As part of Script House, Soho House’s annual short film-making incubator prize, the 2021 edition of Film Lab saw 10 shortlisted upcoming writers from around the world join three workshops over three days at Soho House with various mentors. These included Helen Fielding, Michael Mohan, Mynette Louie, Hilary Shor, and Rochée Jeffrey.
As well as one-to-one sessions between writers and mentors, group workshops gave a deep dive into what it means to tell powerful short-form stories that resonate with a global audience. Across in-person and virtual sessions, the Script House shortlist heard from Film Lab’s industry experts about every part of the short film-making process, from the differing dynamics working with producers and actors through to getting films seen at major international film festivals. To round it off, mentees got a chance to lead table reads of their scripts with experienced actors and mentors providing valuable feedback.
All of the scripts workshopped at this year’s Film Lab centre around 2021’s Script House theme of movement – the potential of change, progress, and collective action. Movement has never been more relevant than now, and as a site for exchanging ideas, expertise, and visions for the future, Film Lab embodied this theme.
Script House 2021 is produced in partnership with Genesis Motor America. From the shortlist of 10 people who participated in Film Lab, two finalists will receive $30,000 to produce their films and one winner will be selected. The Script House judging panel includes Barry Jenkins, Lulu Wang, and Guneet Monga. Finalists will be announced in early October, while the overall winner will be awarded in January 2022.
