Each week, Soho House’s resident music expert Dom Chung reveals the new bands, tracks and artists you should be listening to right now
Friday 30 September 2022 By Dom Chung
Dom Chung is Soho House’s Head of Music, so it stands to reason that when we thought about starting a new weekly music column, he was the first person who sprung to mind.
Each week, every Friday, Chung will be here revealing all the bright new artists he’s been booking to perform at the Houses and the best new music he’s been listening to. Consider him your new guide on your journey into melodic enlightenment.
Today, he’s all about Khruangbin’s team-up with Vieux Farka Touré, the Malian singer and guitarist.
Who and what are you listening to this week, Dom?
‘Ali by Vieux Farka Touré and Khruangbin.'
Where did you discover them?
‘Laura Lee is an old friend, we often went to the same parties and clubs together back in the day, so it was no surprise to me when she put her exceptional taste in music to good use to form Khruangbin. This latest offering sees them team up with Vieux Farka Touré, the Malian singer and guitarist.’
What is it you love about the album?
‘This is a tribute to Touré’s late father, Ali Farka Touré, with all songs a unique interpretation between both parties, which makes for an engaging jam session and a modern take on classic music. Apparently, it was recorded in under a week, and Khruangbin weren’t made aware of any of the songs they were going to record together in advance.’
Where would you position them in the musical canon? How would you describe what they do?
‘Khruangbin are known for blending global music influences, such as classic soul, dub, rock and psychedelia into a dreamlike blend.’
Which are the best tracks/ albums/ live performances to listen to?
‘Check out the full album from start to finish. As we head into autumn, this is the perfect soundtrack for a Sunday in the kitchen, cooking for friends.’
If you had to pick one of their tracks to listen to on repeat, what would it be?
‘My pick of the album is “Lobbo”.’
