When asked to describe her energy, Big Freedia summed it up in six words: loud, proud, bold, unapologetic, free, and love. In many ways, that made her the perfect performer for a rooftop Pride event at Soho House. On Pride weekend, the self-dubbed ‘queen diva’ brought her signature New Orleans bounce all the way to New York in a performance that, according to some partygoers, wasn’t just authentic but made the atmosphere that much more inclusive.

Though many were introduced to Big Freedia via Beyoncé’s hit ‘Formation’, her career began in New Orleans in 1999, and she’s continued to shape Bounce music ever since. But if you’ve kept up with Big Freedia recently, you know that many are calling this season the ‘Summer of Freedia’ – and for good reason: Freedia just channelled flapper-girl glamour in her recent ‘Betty Bussit’ banger, was featured on Lady Gaga’s re-release of Born This Way (which sees Freedia reimagine ‘Judas’ in her signature style), and she’s one of the artists on the upcoming Space Jam soundtrack.

It’s safe to say that Big Freedia isn’t just an unstoppable force, but just the type of confident powerhouse the music industry needs. And, in that sense, her 20-plus year career feels all the more relevant.

Check out the video above of Big Freedia’s performance to relive a Pride highlight at Soho House that members will never forget.
