'When All is Gold' at Babington House

On Thursday 10th March, Jewellery designer Stephen Webster and his wife invited a group of their friends down to Babington House to watch a 20 minute film. When all is Gold, is the title of the 20min film, created by Stephen with the NGO Solidaridad. about the world’s first Fair Trade gold mine.

In January 2011 Stephen travelled to Peru to experience firsthand the difference that Fairtrade certification will make to small scale and artisanal mining communities, as well as to trace the origin of this precious metal.

Preview of 'Submarine' at the Aubin Cinema

On Monday the 14th of March, we hosted a preview screening of the brilliant Brit flick Submarine, in support of The Ministry of Stories.

The screening packed out The Aubin cinema and was introduced by Nick Hornby. In addition there was a wonderful, witty Q & A with the author Joe Dunthorne and the director Richard Ayowade (of IT crowd fame)after the film.

After the Q & A, guests were invited up to the Secret Garden in Shoreditch House, where we held a reception, at which Nick Hornby then gave a very inspiring talk about the importance of The Ministry of Stories.

The Ministry of Stories is a literacy charity, which endeavours to develop reading and writing skills through creativity and imagination enhancing classes, which take place in the back room of a ‘monster supply shop’. The Ministry of Stories aims to inspire a nation of storytellers. The charity runs free writing workshops and mentoring for young people aged 8-18 in East London, supported by volunteer writers, teachers and artists. MoS believes in the power of writing to unleash young people’s extraordinary imaginations, build their confidence and self-respect and enhance their ability to communicate and understand.

The evening raised over £2500 through tickets, donations and the sale of ‘Monster supplies’ and is what we hope will be the start of a long and fruitful relationship with this local community enhancing program.

Red Bull Sessions: David Rodigan Q&A at Shoreditch House

Listen to the David Rodigan Q&A Podcast recorded at Shoreditch House ahead of his live set in the Square Bar.

At 15, David Rodigan started DJing at school dances and youth clubs – and at 58, he doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. Whether it’s collecting soundboy scalps on the clash circuit, juggling dubplates other selectors would sell their grandmas for, or edutaining entire generations of dancehall revellers worldwide with his legendary sets and speeches, the “Gentleman Rudeboy” is a true reggae rocker for life.

Even when he started studying economics and drama, and went on to pursue a serious acting career in the ‘70s, Roddy always kept his passion for music alive as a record salesman and of course DJ. And when he finally obtained a resident slot on Capitol Radio in 1979, the fiyah was fully ignited: In the past 30 years, Rodigan has grown to become a true legend in the reggae world, a respected father figure for many an aspiring soundboy, and a dreaded dominator in countless dubplate battles. He only recently won the renowned RIDDIM Soundclash, compiled a roots ‘n’ culture compilation for BBE Records, voiced an album intro for dubstep producer Caspa, and still hosts a

Monday night slot on Kiss FM, while constantly touring the globe without even a suggestion of fatigue. To sing it in the words of legendary roots balladeer Horace Andy: Don’t think about Rodigan, he’s alright.
